Those contacted for auditions will be seen the week of October 21, 2013. Only those contacted for an audition will be seen.

Performance run: January 10 – 25, 2014

We strongly encourage actors of all ethnic backgrounds to audition.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
Actors will be asked to sing TWO CONTEMPORARY PIECES (16- 32 bars per piece).  Please ensure that one piece is a ballad and the other an up-tempo piece. Artists are expected to bring sheet music for their song. If you do not bring sheet music we will not listen to your song. Acapella auditions are not welcome. It is strongly recommended that actors read the play and familiarize themselves with the characters.

ABOUT THE PLAY:
The Wedding Singer, the musical based on the popular film starring Adam Sandler, is the story of Robbie Hart, a wedding singer whose own luck in love leaves him desolate,  blind to the perfect woman standing right in front of him.  Chock full of salutes to 80s pop culture, The Wedding Singer transports us to the New Jersey shore to find true love in a sea of tulle, layered cakes and first dances.

ABOUT THE THEATRE:
Established in 1919, Hart House Theatre is the University of Toronto’s Performing Arts Leader.  Since its inception, the theatre’s unique mix of young professionals, alumni, and students has garnered the theatre a reputation as a cultural destination for not only the community of U of T but also the city of Toronto.

Call for Submissions: The Syd and Shirley Banks Prize For Emerging Musical Theatre Artists, Acting Up Stage Company

 

WHAT IS IT?
Acting Up Stage Company is excited to continue the Syd & Shirley Banks Prize for Emerging Musical Theatre Artists in the 2013/2014 season.

This opportunity is open to musical theatre artists under 30 years of age who are under-exposed in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Through an open audition process, two artists will be selected and will receive a cash prize, mentorship throughout the season, a showcase cabaret during the run of Elegies as well as a role in our UnCovered: Sting & The Police concert.

 

The Syd and Shirley Banks Prize for Emerging Musical Theatre Artists generously provides two musical theatre artists the opportunity to advance their careers through financial assistance, mentorship and increased exposure.

WHAT IS THE PRIZE?
Two emerging artists will be awarded the prize, each receiving:

1. A $1,000 cash prize.
2. A cabaret created by and starring both winners.

   Winners will work with a director and musical director to create a showcase performance. This showcase cabaret will be performed for two nights during our Elegies run. Key industry personnel will be invited, and the show will be onsale for the general public.

3. A featured role in our UnCovered: Sting & The Police concert.

    

   Each year Acting Up Stage produces a concert that pays tribute to a non-musical theatre artist by re-imagining their songs. After our sold-out, smash hit concerts Tapestries, Both Sides Now and The Long and Winding Road, Acting Up Stage Company blurs the lines of rock, punk and musical theatre with an astonishing evening paying tribute to the music of Sting and The Police.

   The two Syd & Shirley Banks Prize winners will have the opportunity to perform one song in the concert, alongside musical theatre’s finest artists.  UnCovered will take place on November 18, 2013 at Koerner Hall.

4. Mentorship with a 2013/14 season artist.

    

   The selected participants will be paired with an artist from our 2013/2014 season, and will be invited to observe them in rehearsal as well as partaking in one-on-one mentoring sessions. Winners will receive behind-the-scenes access to the creative process, tailored specifically to their interests.

WHO IS ELIGIBILE?
All musical theatre artists are eligible if they meet the following criteria:

• under 30 years of age
• residing in Ontario
• has been a member of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association for less than three years (if at all)

• 1 video or audio clip of you performing any musical theatre song

Auditions will be held in Toronto on September 23 and 24.
