Call for Submissions: 2013 Soulpepper Dance Awards, Soulpepper Theatre Company

Soulpepper Theatre Company provides a home for Toronto’s leading artists and arts organizations across all performance disciplines, while making a major investment in the future of our community by producing festivals and presentations and committing to artistic development and education activities.

Now in its second year, the Soulpepper Dance Awards have been established to recognize excellence in the Toronto Dance Community and Toronto-based artists who exemplify the values of Soulpepper (creativity, innovation, collaboration, and spirit).

 

Soulpepper will be giving awards in four (4) categories:

• Emerging Dance Artist: An Emerging Dance Artist is one who has been a professional for under 6 years, and is under the age of 40.
• Senior Dance Artist: A Senior Dance Artist is one who has been a professional for 6 years or more, and is older than 40.
• Community Dance Artist: A Community Dance Artist is one who has made a meaningful community contribution to the city of Toronto through dance.
• Multi-Disciplinary Artist: A dance artist who has expanded the form of dance through collaboration with other disciplines.

Soulpepper Dance Award recipients will each receive a Discovery Lab valued at $8,000 (two weeks of studio or theatre space, 40 hours of technician services, front of house services for an “open studio” (public showing of work), use of lighting/video/projection equipment – as available), and a $3,000 commissioning budget.

The Soulpepper Dance Award committee will announce the final three (3) short listed candidates for each category by September 9, 2013.

The three short listed candidates in each category (i.e. 12 candidates in total) will be invited to perform in the 2013 Global Cabaret Festival. More information to follow.

The winners will be announced at the Global Cabaret Festival (October 24 – 27, 2013).

The Soulpepper Dance Awards are open to all sectors of Dance in Toronto.  We encourage submissions from Dance Artists of all genres and ask that this call for submission to be distributed widely.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION
Soulpepper will be accepting self-nominations from Dance Artists who meet the requirements.

To be considered for the 2013 Soulpepper Dance Awards please submit the following:

1. 2013 Dance Award Nomination Form (below)
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Artist Biography
4. How you would use the Discovery Lab resources? (250 words max)
5. How will this opportunity enrich your current artistic practice? (250 words max)

Submissions on behalf of another individual will also be accepted however the considered Artist must address item #4 and #5 in their own words.

Submissions should reflect Soulpepper values of creativity, innovation, collaboration, and spirit.

Artists submitting to be considered for the category of Community Artist or Multidisciplinary Artist should propose projects that align with these classifications.

Call for Submissions: Fifth Annual 24-Hour Playwriting Contest, Pat the Dog Playwright Centre

 

Pat the Dog Playwright Centre is thrilled to announce that we are hosting our fifth annual 24-Hour Playwriting Contest. Contestants write off-site, so you can hit the keyboard at home, in a coffee shop, on a bus…the location is up to you. There’s no entry fee and no restrictions on final script length. All you have to do is write an original script using three secret words—in 24 hours.

 

Feeling up to the challenge? The Contest runs from 4:00 PM on Friday, October 4, 2012 to4:00 PM Saturday, October 5, 2012.

Space is limited so sign up early.

Rules and Regulations:

1. The contest runs from 4:00 PM on Friday, October 4, 2013 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 5, 2013.
2. The contest is open to anyone living in Ontario. Space is limited to the first 30 entrants, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
3. Entrants can work from a page of prepared notes, but all plays are to be original works.
4. The script must include, in some form, the three secret words we select. These words will be emailed to the participants at 4:00 PM on Friday, October 4, 2013.
5. Participants must email their play to the designated email address no later than 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 5, 2013.
6. Scripts must be in electronic format (acceptable extensions include .doc, .docx or .pdf), written in 12 point Arial, Courier or Times Roman, double-spaced between speaking parts, and formatted for 8 1/2” X 11” paper.
7. The title page should contain the title of the play, your name, contact number and email. The play itself must NOT contain your name, but have a header with the play title and page numbers.

Prizes & Notification:
Winners will be announced on our website and Twitter/Facebook pages (@PatTheDogPDC) on Monday, October 7, 2013. Prizes will be awarded as follows:

• First place prize will be $500, a public staged reading of the winning script, and a Q&A with the winning playwright published on our website.
• Second place: a reading.
• Third place: a reading.

Pat the Dog Playwright Centre is Ontario’s only playwright centre open to both established and emerging artists. We are dedicated to the development of both contemporary Canadian work and new writers for the stage. As a non-producing theatre association, we focus on the playwright, acting as a resource for both writers and producing theatres to further the art of dramaturgy and new play development.

Call for Submissions: The Syd and Shirley Banks Prize For Emerging Musical Theatre Artists, Acting Up Stage Company

 

WHAT IS IT?
Acting Up Stage Company is excited to continue the Syd & Shirley Banks Prize for Emerging Musical Theatre Artists in the 2013/2014 season.

This opportunity is open to musical theatre artists under 30 years of age who are under-exposed in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Through an open audition process, two artists will be selected and will receive a cash prize, mentorship throughout the season, a showcase cabaret during the run of Elegies as well as a role in our UnCovered: Sting & The Police concert.

 

The Syd and Shirley Banks Prize for Emerging Musical Theatre Artists generously provides two musical theatre artists the opportunity to advance their careers through financial assistance, mentorship and increased exposure.

WHAT IS THE PRIZE?
Two emerging artists will be awarded the prize, each receiving:

1. A $1,000 cash prize.
2. A cabaret created by and starring both winners.

   Winners will work with a director and musical director to create a showcase performance. This showcase cabaret will be performed for two nights during our Elegies run. Key industry personnel will be invited, and the show will be onsale for the general public.

3. A featured role in our UnCovered: Sting & The Police concert.

    

   Each year Acting Up Stage produces a concert that pays tribute to a non-musical theatre artist by re-imagining their songs. After our sold-out, smash hit concerts Tapestries, Both Sides Now and The Long and Winding Road, Acting Up Stage Company blurs the lines of rock, punk and musical theatre with an astonishing evening paying tribute to the music of Sting and The Police.

   The two Syd & Shirley Banks Prize winners will have the opportunity to perform one song in the concert, alongside musical theatre’s finest artists.  UnCovered will take place on November 18, 2013 at Koerner Hall.

4. Mentorship with a 2013/14 season artist.

    

   The selected participants will be paired with an artist from our 2013/2014 season, and will be invited to observe them in rehearsal as well as partaking in one-on-one mentoring sessions. Winners will receive behind-the-scenes access to the creative process, tailored specifically to their interests.

WHO IS ELIGIBILE?
All musical theatre artists are eligible if they meet the following criteria:

• under 30 years of age
• residing in Ontario
• has been a member of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association for less than three years (if at all)

Call for Submissions: RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition, Tarragon Theatre

ONE WEEK LEFT!

The deadline for one of Canada’s most prestigious contests for new artists – the fifth annual RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition – is August 19,  2013 at 5 pm.

You have only ONE WEEK LEFT to submit your play!

 

Tarragon will consider full-length plays (min. 80 minutes) written in English by Canadian citizens or permanent residents.  To qualify, a playwright must be emerging, which is defined as someone with less than five years of professional playwriting experience.

The competition’s winner will receive a cash prize of $3,000, the opportunity to showcase their play in Tarragon Theatre’s Play Reading Week  2014, a year’s worth of mentorship from a Tarragon Theatre affiliated playwright, as well as dramaturgical support from Tarragon Theatre’s Literary Manager.

Call for Play Submissions: National and Local Mainstage Series – rEvolver Theatre Festival, Upintheair Theatre

Upintheair Theatre is now accepting applications for the 2014 rEvolver Theatre Festival. rEvolver will be presented at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (The Cultch) May 13th – 25th, 2014.

We invite submissions from companies and artists from across Canada who wish to have their work considered for presentation. We are particularly interested in original productions with running times of 50 – 90 minutes but any running time will be considered by the jury.

About the Festival:
rEvolver presents adventurous, high energy, and sophisticated new work by emerging companies and artists, bringing audiences the full range of contemporary theatrical practice, from script-based theatre to devised and site-specific works, staged readings of work-in-progress, and in-depth discussions with artists. rEvolver is the only venue in Vancouver dedicated to offering professional presenting opportunities to emerging artists and companies. Expect everything EXCEPT the Kitchen Sink.

rEvolver is a juried festival. The festival features primarily new Canadian work, although we welcome submissions from companies wishing to premiere re-interpretations existing works from the theatre canon. In particular, we encourage work that takes risks, is creative and has a clear artistic vision. At the same time, we will be looking for work that is accessible and engaging to audiences.

rEvolver Theatre Festival will provide successful companies with:

• Performance guarantee and box-office split
• Venue equipped with festival lighting and sound at The Cultch – one of Vancouver’s most prestigious theatres
• Venue technician and technical support from the Festival Technical Director
• Presence in Festival advertising and marketing including website, brochure, press releases
