Soulpepper Theatre Company provides a home for Toronto’s leading artists and arts organizations across all performance disciplines, while making a major investment in the future of our community by producing festivals and presentations and committing to artistic development and education activities.
Now in its second year, the Soulpepper Dance Awards have been established to recognize excellence in the Toronto Dance Community and Toronto-based artists who exemplify the values of Soulpepper (creativity, innovation, collaboration, and spirit).
Soulpepper will be giving awards in four (4) categories:
- Emerging Dance Artist: An Emerging Dance Artist is one who has been a professional for under 6 years, and is under the age of 40.
- Senior Dance Artist: A Senior Dance Artist is one who has been a professional for 6 years or more, and is older than 40.
- Community Dance Artist: A Community Dance Artist is one who has made a meaningful community contribution to the city of Toronto through dance.
- Multi-Disciplinary Artist: A dance artist who has expanded the form of dance through collaboration with other disciplines.
Soulpepper Dance Award recipients will each receive a Discovery Lab valued at $8,000 (two weeks of studio or theatre space, 40 hours of technician services, front of house services for an “open studio” (public showing of work), use of lighting/video/projection equipment – as available), and a $3,000 commissioning budget.
The Soulpepper Dance Award committee will announce the final three (3) short listed candidates for each category by September 9, 2013.
The three short listed candidates in each category (i.e. 12 candidates in total) will be invited to perform in the 2013 Global Cabaret Festival. More information to follow.
The winners will be announced at the Global Cabaret Festival (October 24 – 27, 2013).
The Soulpepper Dance Awards are open to all sectors of Dance in Toronto. We encourage submissions from Dance Artists of all genres and ask that this call for submission to be distributed widely.
NOMINATION AND SELECTION
Soulpepper will be accepting self-nominations from Dance Artists who meet the requirements.

- 2013 Dance Award Nomination Form (below)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Artist Biography
- How you would use the Discovery Lab resources? (250 words max)
- How will this opportunity enrich your current artistic practice? (250 words max)
Submissions on behalf of another individual will also be accepted however the considered Artist must address item #4 and #5 in their own words.
Submissions should reflect Soulpepper values of creativity, innovation, collaboration, and spirit.
Artists submitting to be considered for the category of Community Artist or Multidisciplinary Artist should propose projects that align with these classifications.
